AWI Magazine Power Hour: Hosted By Bill Ashton reviewing the Carnage Conroversy

*An older looking newsroom is seen almost like something out of a 80s movie complete with type writers and copy machines in the background as the camera pans to our host near the copier holding a coffee but ready to roll as the opening show credits momentarily creep onto the screen and then cut abruptly to Bill Ashton editor of American Wrestling Illustrated…the number 70157th source for wrestling news!*

Live via Satellite: “Hey thanks Bill, great to see you again. Yeah so as for the AWX…this tournament that has been going on way too long finally came to and end but I have to say they caught me off guard with their end result. Having the winner turn out to be someone else altogether is probably never been done before but on top of that the fact that we finally got an answer to the Mystery owner deal and after months of speculation that it would be Kal Alexander or Will Micman as I have stated many times in my newsletter we were all swerved successfully. I am told Erik Richmond is legitimately their behind the scenes head writer and his footprints were all over this show. How they got Bubba Riley and Alexis Santos to appear on this show I will never know but I am told that much of what we saw at the end of the show was a last minute change on the creative staff as the original finish was leaked months ago. “

It is a shock to say the least but help me make sense of this. Storyline wise Jon claims that the switch was made years ago at an AWX PPV with the infamous backlot brawl with Jon and Carnage with the flaming bike incident.  Is it true that Jon Hardcastle Jr. has been appearing as this character ever since this time??”

Live via Satellite: “Yeah..to make sense of this I have been told by sources inside the AWX that this is indeed the case. Originally Carnage was played by former XWA Journey men Adrian Maxwell. Maxwell was able to get the character over and he was making a ton of money for the company in merchandise sales and PPV buys. The problem was Adrian was not well liked behind the scenes and had real life vices much like his character but he was the real deal…basically what you saw on TV was pretty much the guy and one night he basically told AWX Officials his body was too banged up and he needed to step away from the business . The company was in a bind with a number of PPV’s on the docket and the Carnage character figured in to many of the marquee matches they had to scramble to figure out how to replace Adrian when the only guy who fit the bill was his last opponent Jon Jr. So story has it Jon and Adrian/Carnage discussed all the characters mannerisms and technique and when that makeup went on…BANG..they had their White Devil. Jon Jr. usually played it up by appearing twice in one night once as himself the later as The White Devil on all PPV and live event shows. It was a guarded secret in that locker room.No dirt sheet out there had that scoop.”

That whole theory makes sense until you realize that in the AWX’s qualifying Battle Royals…more specifically the Old School Battle Royal. BOTH Jon Jr. AND Carnage appeared in that match at the same time which dismantles the theory that Jon Jr. was Carnage the entire time when CLEARLY this rumor was dispelled on that show.”

Live via Satellite: “Tell me Bill..what is the key to a great mystery?? The key is misdirection and planting a series of intentional redirects that keeps attention on something else rather than the real suspect… correct? AWX used that one match to as the “Macguffin” .Its a term Alfred Hitchcock himself would use to describe such plot points in his movies for a motivating element in a story that is used to drive the plot. Carnage was the Macguffin! In our minds we never at any point believe that Carnage is anything but what he is. We are never given a reason to think such a thing…but we WERE given a reason NOT to think there was a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Placing Jon and Carnage in that battle royal together is the single most brilliant plot point that company has executed in its existence. This story had layers on top of layers and I have to give it to creative on this one. They even teased a “Nightmare” at one point that I will get into later.”

Live via Satellite:” I was just getting to that…the Carnage that appeared on the Old School Battle Royal  was from all reports Adrian Maxwell..The ORIGINAL CARNAGE!! According to my source AWX Officials reached out to Maxwell to return to the character and the company months before the PPV and the Memorial Tournament and even brought him in to roll around in the ring to shake off his ring rust but his first days back it was apparent that he was not in ring shape and his old habits were still at large…so as a consolation he was asked just to do the Battle Royal and then Jon jr. would once again resume the character and everyone is misdirected effectively that Carnage could NEVER be at least Jon Jr. From all accounts Adrian showed up that day in full make up andfor the first time in years in shape physically and in the ring. He was given a very nice payday and didn’t miss a beat. It was like he could go again..but at the end of the night he collected his paycheck…and maybe some actual drugs then I am told he up and left the building. Maxwell will never return as a full time wrestler…at least not for AWX or under the Carnage character which all rights are owned by the company anyways.”

Live via Satellite: “Honestly Bill it was always going to be Carnage at that point the XWA angle was going to be the center piece to the show and it was going to be a much different reveal…all fingers pointed to former XWA champion Nightmare and they had gotten so far along with that conclusion that he was flown to New York that night but in the 12th hour he was told they were going another direction. They still have plans to use all available XWA Talent but I cannot say with certainty how many are locked in. I will say that it will be interesting this Monday night to see who shows up as they have a ton of independent talent locked in for this storyline. Ill be watching Bill…this has the markings of a good ride. That said AWX has gone bankrupt previously in the past…going back to the well and relying on a past feud to draw your business can be risky but who knows…I just write about this stuff.”
